Nestled on the North African shores of the Mediterranean, Tunisia has for thousands of years been a part of the European sphere.  Carthage, the famous harbour city that was attacked and sacked by the Romans, and Tunis, once a Roman centre of agricultural administration, have long been considered a part of the Mediterranean's huge chain of interconnected trading centres.  The town of Sousse is particularly popular with tourists who favour it's many resorts and it's close proximity to Monastir, the charter airport town.  The town of El Jem contains one of the most perfectly preserved Roman ampitheaters in the world, whilst Douga and Kerkouane are the locations of old Roman and Punic settlements that have been abandoned to the sands of time.  Matmata in the south of Tunisia is particularly popular with movie fans - it was the filming location of several scenes in the Star Wars series.  The main cities on the coast of Tunisia (Banzart, Tunis, Sousse and Monastir) are connected by the A1 motorway, whilst Sfax and Jem are on the P1 motorway that continues south from Sousse.

Tunis is serviced by the Tunis-Carthage International Airport, visited by British Airways, TunisAir, Air France and many other international airlines.  Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport, close by to the resort town of Sousse, is serviced by airlines such as First Choice Airways, Thomas Cook and Thomsonfly.  Djerba-Zarzis Airport, Thyna Airport and Nefta Airport are also visited by major European airlines, though none which connect from the United Kingdom.  Car hire companies in operation within Tunisia (based from the arrivals area of all the airports) include Avis, Hertz, Budget and Sixt.
